My work is created by a unique process based on the ancient Chinese art form of "Nei Wah", which means, "to paint from behind on glass".  Using tissues, mulberry and rice papers, gold and silver leaf, paint, snippets of text, calligraphy, leaves and other things, I assemble a collage directly on the back of the glass.  The layering and overlapping of the tissues result in many subtle variations in color and pattern.  The glass panels are then combined into constructions to create the finished piece of art.

One of the principle influences on my work is music, particularly jazz.  The fragments and pieces of paper may seem random but come together through design to create a composition that is both balanced and spontaneous.  The strong black marks that are characteristic of my work serve visually as percussion or the beat that holds the work together and gives it a sense of order.  I think of these pieces as "windows".  They are an architectural barrier and a protection.  One sees clearly through windows although they separate us from reality.
