Roberta Hancock

Roberta Hancock, a local fine artist and illustrator has resided in Arizona since early childhood.  Her colorful palette reflects the strong influence of the Southwest and the Mexican-American culture, though characteristically, her style is considered to be Surrealistic rather than Southwestern Folk.

Though Roberta never pursued formal training in the Arts, she has extensive professional experience in the fields of advertising, graphic design and illustration.   After twelve years running a successful design studio, Roberta retired to pursue her illustration and fine art careers full time.  Today, her popular illustrations can be seen in numerous local, national and international publications and her fine art can be found within the Arizona Science Center in colorful mural designs.

Roberta creates her dramatic imagery with both oils and pastels.  Her images are soft but vibrant and her subjects, if not satirical, are generally whimsical.  Roberta’s humorous nature is infectious and evident in her work.  Using exaggerated perspective and raking shadows, absurdity collides headlong with mediocrity and the common marries the bizarre.  In all of this, however, there remains a sense of familiarity, a simplicity that draws so many people to her work.
